Back From the Dead

CRREEAAAK… the coffin lid opens, the dirt is pushed aside and the 4SEB blog rises again.

So sorry for not reporting on the games from the end of February through early March, but I caught a nasty gross lay-you-out sickness that kept me horizontal for two weeks and not playing 4 Square. But like the undead, you just can’t stop the Square. Even though there have been no blog posts for the past 3 weeks, games have happened. These games have been hard-fought, thrilling and rained upon. For the last two weeks of February, the players who gather in the Rockridge BART parking lot on Thursday nights were joined by precipitation. Undaunted, they played anyway. Wet and dirty hands smacked balls and nimble feet dodged puddles. The square did have to be moved and retaped to avoid being swept away, but what needed to be done got done and fun was the result.

I’d like to take a moment right now to give a big thank you shout out to Robert Wong, who held it down like gravity and made sure the square was set up, that all who showed up were noted and photos were taken. He’s been sending me the info for the past couple weeks, but I’ve been slacking. My bad. Here are photos for you to enjoy!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Okay let’s do the run down of who was there when it happened.

2/17/11 players: Uriah, Julian, Jessica, Robert, Lali, Jordan, Judi, Leah, Jack, Justin, Phil, Paul, Vi, Chelsea, Adam (birthday boy) and a couple more! Challenge winner: Jordan. Elimination winner: Vi. This night was very cold, so props to the bodies that showed up and played. Thanks to Uriah and Lali for your rocking music…

2/24/11 players: Robert, Jessica, Max, Eric, Sanjay, Lali, Jerome, Michele, Leah, Jack and Phil. Players who did not play, but went to Ben & Nick’s instead: Lee, Uriah, Gabby, Jordan, Judi, Paul, Adam and Anne-Marie. Again, this night was cold AND wet. Gross. Robert brought the music and though the night started late and ended early, Leah walked away with an elimination win. Way to go!

3/3/11 players: Lee, Robert, Julian, Sanjay, Travis, Liz, Vi, Paul, Brittany, Rachel, Judi, Sam, Jack, Leah, Mike, Adam, Laura, Lisa, William, Elom, Rachel and Charlie. The night was not rainy or even that cold. Win. Speaking of winning, congrats to Mike for winning elimination! What is this, your 50th time as a winner? Whata playa…

3/10/11 players: Robert, Jordan, Sam, Sanjay, Phil, Blake, Anna, Claire, Kevin, Adam, Lali, Judi, Leah, Jack and Leah. Special guest appearance by Sam’s parents. They did not play. The games picked up and went all the way to the end. Elimination was won by Robert who really, really deserves it. High Five!

Daaamn, that’s a wrap! Muy bueno if you read this entire thing. Really I was just expecting people to look at the pictures. Thanks again to all the players who have played. Though it’s been cold (is this the Bay Area winter?) have no fear that the games will pick up as the weather gets nicer. Remember, it’s your job to bring new people! 4SEB could not happen without you.

Big shout out to the folks on the East Coast because Boston’s own Squarefour had their annual World Championships of Four Square in Maine at the end of February. Check this out and see what the tourney looks like. Could we take them? Maybe…

Also, our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the earthquake off of the coast of Japan. As Californians, we know all too well the dangers of living with the threat of an unpredictable natural disaster. To help victims, you can give to the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.  And you should be safe yourself! Are you prepared for a disaster? Check out and put together a plan and go-bag for everyone in your house. I’ve got mine, it’s got water, food, blankets, a radio, a ball and some chalk.

Be safe! It feels so good to be back among the living…

Province of the Mists

Even though it’s summertime, the Bay Area has been having some crappy weather. While we are used to having extended periods of gray though out the wintery months (we don’t get snow) we also appreciate the patches of blue with sunshine during the warmer seasons. This year, none of that. We’ve had gray for a couple weeks now. It’s tea and book weather, not summer fun weather. Yesterday the East Bay was granted with a reprieve from the gray an the sun came out to remind us that ‘Hey! It’s August!’ While the day itself was nice, the night brought a different story. Fog. Mist. Haze. There was only one way to clear the air: generate hella heat while playing 4 Square. 4SEB did just that and by the end of the night, the fog had burned off. We take full responsibility for that. You’re welcome.

Players from all over came together last night to meet each other and have fun. Riding the successful release of our latest video the existence of 4 Square of the East Bay has become known by more and more people. And for some reason they think it’s cool! Super fun rules came around and newbies were introduced to the commie rule (not the ‘tommy’ rule), pirate square, the bird rule, countries of the world, get-to-know-you square, the on-deck rule, dance square, spin rounds and many more. Remember, if you are in ‘A’ square you are King and make the rules in your Kingdom. Have fun with it, but don’t be a tyrant or the mob will rise up against you. As we’ve learned from the SCA guys just down the lot, be benevolent or be overthrown and beat up by knights.

The players were old and new: Travis, Steph, Rachel, Paul, Lee, Jordan, Uriah, Sam, Sanjay, Jane, Nicole, Jess, Nathan, Robert, Liz, Angie, Ian, Amy, Cole, Mike, Chris, Yaminah, Laura, Gabe, Madeline, Catherine, Adam, Mike, Gabby, Wade, Kendall, Mike, Zaheen, Jerome, Casey and Rasha. It’s not easy to be a winner, let alone to win a 4 Square Challenge but 3 of the vets were successful and get to be on the blog. Again. Woo-tothe-hoo for Jordan, Lee and Uriah!

Gotta show love to everyone who came out and had fun. It’s gotten to the point where Square 2 opens earlier and earlier each week to accommodate all of the hungry ballers who show up. And that’s just the way we like it. After going strong for most of the night Square 2 was closed about 10 minutes to midnight and the line formed up on Square 1. The intensity was totally on. There is nothing like sweaty people staring at you while you are playing (hoping you lose) to distract you. Of course, some players thrive in those conditions. At the end of the night Wade and Gabby faced off to see who really was the King of the Province of the Mists. While Wade put up a good front he just couldn’t handle the pressure and buckled allowing Gabby to ascend to power and posterity. All hail King Gabby!

Well that does it for our little corner of the world! It was super fun to see and meet all the new people, hope that you come back with tons of friends. Hit up our facebook page and help spread the word about urban games! This weekend holds a lot of fun community events so get out there and enjoy Oakland! It all starts tonight with the Superhero Bike Ride at 7:30pm launching from Lake Merritt BART. It’s gonna wind its way through the Town and eventually end up somewhere fun with drinks and pizza! On Saturday there isn’t just one, but two awesome scenes you should check out. For those in East(ish) Oakland head over to the Laurel Street Fair from 11am to 4pm. For those of you in North Oakland, the Fresh Fest is going down with hella performers from the Bay including Boots from the Coup, Erk the Jerk, J.Million and D0 D.A.T. This is gonna be a smackin green time for everyone! Lastly, don’t forget that 4 Square of the East Bay is headlining at Albany Streets on Sunday, August 22nd in Albany so mark your calendars and get ready to play some games! As always, be safe, have fun…

Constructing Yourself a Win

Posted in 4 Square East Bay with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 6, 2010 by 4squareeastbay

Thursday night the regular ballers were joined by the hard working forces of BART’s seismic retrofitting crew. While this ongoing construction has been known to block lanes of the lot, generate a bunch of noise and cover-up parking spaces, they have yet to interfere with our square. We gotta give the folks who were working props for hustling their overtime and doing their job while a bunch of grown-ass kids danced around and hit balls at each other. Oh how they wanted to play with us, staring longingly from the boom-lift, clad in reflective vests and hard hats. Or maybe they were just wondering what they were doing surrounded by playground games on one side and people dressed as knights on the other. Ahh Thursdays, you always bring out the weirdos…

The games were jovial with the return of rules that have been absent from past weeks. Spinning, clapping, jumping, catching, yelling, squatting and cartwheeling were all included. One of the best parts about 4SEB is that if you get to A Square, you get to make the rules! This can be a lot of pressure with many players not calling rules upon entering the top square, but there are always folks who go for it with gusto. That’s what we want, people with gusto. Get creative, get funky, get into it! If you are in A Square, take the power vested in you and do something with it! If other players don’t like it, they can get the fuck out of your square or play by your rules until they dethrone you. It’s what makes it challenging, interesting and a whole lot of fun…

Shout to the players who played by the rules and through the construction: Jordan, Robert, Lee, Gabby, Sam, Liz, Vi, Angie, Rachel, David, Mike, Paul, Hannah, Charlie and Jerome. New folks included Frank, Lyman, John, Isaac and Sean (who was just passing through the lot and got sucked in by the awesome). Two 4 Square challenges were won this week so take your hands off your mouse (or smart phone) and put them together for Sam and Jordan!

It got really real at the end of the night as the workers wrapped up their work and the players set about working each other. Rachel brought back the ‘Dramatic Death’ rule which means that once a player gets out, they must die a dramatic death to emphasize the tragedy of losing. This rule carried over to the elimination round and after player after player falling dead to the pavement, Robert stood as the only living soul in the parking lot. Way to live, Robert, way to live…

So that was Thursday night! 4SEB knows that there are people across the country that are checking up on our weekly game for inspiration and entertainment. We hope to do both. Sorry for the tardy posting, but you know… weekends. We’ve got big things coming up this month, mainly the TWO YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR 4SEB! That’s happening June 17th so show up with your crew and let’s party! And then we are gonna be at the Oaklavia Festival at Broadway and 10th on Sunday, June 27.  Also big shout out to Hella Tight hats for adorning the heads of a couple of the players on Thursday. Maybe we can get some 4 Square fitteds? I’m just sayin… See you next Thursday!
